21 January - The Development of Lady Well Close - A Windmill, a wharf, a spring, a pub, speculative property development, and much more...!
An illustrated talk by Dr Louise Wheatley
Lady Well Close was in the New Walk Terrace area, between Fulford Road and the River Ouse.

Why did this small 4 acre plot on the border between Fulford Township and the City of York attracted York merchants, aldermen, brewers (and their daughters) and later haberdashers, linen drapers and booksellers (and their daughters, too) I feel we need to see what is happening in the neighbourhood and that means delving back a little earlier in time.
18 February - The Merchant Adventurers Hall, the story of who built it
An illustrated talk by Bob Hale
When the Company of Merchant Adventurers of York was established in 1581, the magnificent guild hall they inherited and still occupy today was already well over 200 years old. A set of detailed accounts surviving from the mid-14th century, probably unparalleled in this country, tell us how it came to be built and by whom.

18 March - Our Annual General Meeting + Life in York 100 Years Ago
An Illustrated talk on photographs from the Hanstock Collection by Ian Drake, YAYAS (York Architectural and York Archaeological Society)
Thomas Joseph Wilmott Hanstock (Born 23rd February 1871; died 7th February 1942) was a York commercial photographer. His collection, bequeathed to YAYAS by Peter Hanstock, comprises portraits, group shots, wedding photos, events, and postcard images, including those of York Minster, churches, and villages just outside York.

15 April - FFH Members to visit York Explore to see the 1759 Fulford Enclosure Map and the accompanying Schedule Book allocating the enclosed plots to their new owners.
York Explore staff kindly arranged for other historic maps of our area to be on display as well. A feast for map lovers!

10 June - Our Festival of Ideas Event - Food and Farming in Early Heslington.
How the archaeology discovered at Heslington East Campus has informed our understanding of the early inhabitants of our area.
Lead by Steve Roskam of the University of York and Louise Wheatley, current Chair of FFH.
Chaired by John Oxley, this inter-disciplinary event used archaeological, documentary and pictorial evidence to explore the production, processing and consumption of food in the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval periods at Heslington. It considered both continuities and variations in agricultural practices over time and drawing out the wider social implications.

15 July - Henry VIII's Journey to Aldi - Why and how did Henry VIII come to York in 1541.
An Illustrated talk by Keely Hayes-Davies of the University of York
This event was arranged to complement the Theatre Royal's production of 'Sovereign' by CJ Samson.
Henry VIII and his new wife Catherine came on a Royal Progress to York with a huge retinue of courtiers an soldiers, accompanied by a massive baggage train. After perambulating around east Yorkshire, the massive convoy trundled up to Fulford Cross, where the city officials knelt in fear as the city Recorder read an abject apology for their role in the rebellion known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. But Henry was not just in York to stamp his power on the rebellious north, he was also hoping to meet the Scottish King James IV.

Understanding Parliamentary enclosures, land tax and tithes from 1700. An illustrated talk by Lauren Grindley.
28 October - Wildlife and wildlife management at York University during the last 30 years
An illustrated talk by Gordon Eastham, Grounds and Ecology Manager, University of York.
A tale of the development of a light-touch approach to wildlife management at York University. Letting nature largely take its course among the populations of geese, ducks, swans, rabbits, deer, foxes, stoats, carp, pike, eels, herons and otters who inhabit or predate West and East campus – but with some strategic moves to encourage some species and dissuade others. The story of Long Boi was included!
11 November - Remembering the men named on the WW2 memorial in Heslington church
Rev. Peter Mott gave an illustrated talk exploring and celebrating the lives of the men named on the memorial and in the graveyard of Heslington Church
With 2 minutes silence at 11am and laying a wreath at the memorial

Dr Mark McFetridge was a clinical psychologist at the Retreat from its Bicentenary in 1996 until the closure of inpatient services in 2018. Mark will discuss the changing emphasis on the healing power of relationships across the postwar history of the Retreat's psychiatric care. He intends to consider the significance of afternoon tea, air crashes and Acorns, at the Retreat 1947-2018.

Dr Mark McFetridge was a clinical psychologist at the Retreat from its Bicentenary in 1996 until the closure of inpatient services in 2018. Mark will discuss the changing emphasis on the healing power of relationships across the postwar history of the Retreat's psychiatric care. He intends to consider the significance of afternoon tea, air crashes and Acorns, at the Retreat 1947-2018.

The Novotel is built on York’s Anglian trading and manufacturing centre at the time of Alcuin. The aim of the conference was to develop understanding of Eoforwic and its relationship with the royal and ecclesiastical city centre, and make comparisons with other Wic towns in England and the near continent. Roman, Viking-Age and medieval York are now well-known, but what about the centuries from c.450-850, when York slips from the stage only to re-emerge as a centre worthy of capture by the Viking Great Army?

Jon gave us all inspiration with his experience from working with other local history groups as to kind of group activities we can do. Check out the News page for some activities that have come from Jon's primer. Saturday 11 February Kohima Museum and Imphal barracks tour. Bob Cook and Brian Ward Meet in Aldi car park opposite the Imphal Barracks at 10.30 am sharp for a tour of the Museum and a look around the barracks. If you are planning on coming and didn't sign the sheet at the January meeting then Email Bob ( [email protected]) and he will get your security pass processed before the 11th to speed up getting us all in on the day. The tour should finish by 12.30. Saturday 17th March Hands-on-documents and geneaology workshop. Louise Wheatley and Gavin Thomas A workshop to become familiar with the types of documents available for the history of your family, house and other interests. We should have Internet access in the church hall and Gavin will demonstrate some simple tools for doing family history research. Usual place, St Oswalds Church Hall from 10am to noon. An opportunity for members to bring along items of memorabilia relating to York and the FFH area. Saturday 16th June Back lanes and tofts - a Heslington walking tour. Led by Louise Wheatley. Meet in Heslington Village at 10am. It was a horrid rainy day, so this might be repeated in 2013. Saturday 21st July The development of York Cemetery. Hugh Murray. York historian Hugh Murray will give us a guided tour of the Cemetery and its development, decline and restoration. This event will cost £2.50 per person and includes tea/coffee in the chapel at the end of the walking tour. Meet inside the entrance of York Cemetery, on Cemetery Road, Fishergate at 10am until noon. Monday 27th August Fulford Show Come and see our stand at the Show. We are researching the Fulford Biscuit - made by the Leng family. Bring along your own biscuits for the stand! Social Evening and Quiz from 7.30pm. Meet at the Fulford Arms (near the Barracks). Landlord and local history buff Steve Bradley prepared an excellent quiz and we all had to work together to try and figure out the answers.....fiendish. Saturday 12 November Walking Tour of Heslington 10am to noon. Meet in Campus North carpark behind JB Morrell Library; wear sensible shoes and bring a rain coat just in case! Louise Wheatley led a walking tour which was well received - this may we repeated in the Summer of 2012. Saturday 1st October Inaugural meeting. We had our first meeting at St. Oswald's Church Hall, which went very well and about 30 interested people turned up which was great. Louise Wheatley made a cake with an FFH theme and Gavin Thomas did a short presentation to try and highlight some of the activities we could do as a local history group. Many of the outcomes of this meeting have been reflected in our programme for 2012!.
