Overview of the Development
Work Is progressing on the large housing development by Persimmon Homes on the southern fringes of Fulford.
The project has been particularly controversial due to concerns about traffic, social infrastructure, flooding and uncertainty over the location of the battle of Fulford.
As a Local History Society, we have stood aside from involvement in these issues. However, one benefit from the development is the extensive archaeological investigation which forms part of the planning consent, in addition to the investigations by the Fulford Battlefield Society.
The City of York Council's Historic Landscape Appraisal of the development says:-
"There is no disputing that a battle took place in the vicinity of Fulford in 1066. However, its exact location is still a matter of debate. The fact is that no consensus of opinion currently exists as to its likely location. Within this context, the proposed development site is the only probable location that has been subjected to rigorous archaeological investigation. No archaeological evidence of any kind has been recovered to suggest that development site was the site of the battle."
FFH Chairman Chris Rainger, visited the site during the preliminary archaeological investigations by Malton Archaeology Practice, and was told that no 'battle-related' evidence had come to light.
FFH has received bulletins from archaeologists during the investigations which will precede each stage of the construction work and we also hope to have a site visit. Click HERE to read Bulletin 1.

Dig It ! Fulford Battlefield
During Archaeology Fortnight, York Young Archaeologists' Club and a team from the Fulford Battlefield Society are working next to Germany Beck to try and finally prove that it is definitely the site of the 1066 Battle of Fulford. They would love you to visit the site and/or join them on site working as an archaeologist! The picture left, shows Community Archaeologist Jon Kenny and some of the volunteers. They are working at the site until 30th July and work will be continuing on an adjacent site through August 2016. |
