Like so much work on York's history, this work builds on the shoulders of others, particularly the excellent Gazetteer in the York Historical Atlas (see HERE). Many streets in the centre of York have ancient origins like the Roman road into the city from London - Micklegate, which is still known by its Anglo-Scandinavian name 'Great Street' and Fishergate, again of Anglo-Scandinavian origin as 'Fiscergate' the street of the fisherman.
